Product Review – Amande Cultured Almond Milk

Up until recently, Wildwood Probiotic Soyogurt was my favorite non-dairy yogurt. It has a great consistency and flavor. I eat it only occasionally, though, because I try not to have too much soy.

A few months ago, a new contender popped up on the shelves of my food coop – Amande almond yogurt. Amande is a dairy free, completely vegan, soy free, certified kosher, almond based yogurt. It’s gluten, soy and GMO free. It is fruit juice sweetened. I learned on the company’s website that the reason for adding sweetener at all is not for flavoring, but rather to fuel the growth of the live cultures. It contains six live cultures that are grown in a non dairy medium, and have an abundance of health benefits.

I taste tested the plain, blueberry and strawberry flavors. Overall, the consistency was better than any non dairy yogurt I have tried. Granted, it has been many years since I’ve had milk based yogurt, but I believe the texture is almost identical. It is creamy and smooth, with no aftertaste. I found the blueberry and strawberry flavors a little too sweet for my taste, but I also always found milk based yogurt with fruit too sweet. They are definitely comparable. I absolutely LOVE the plain flavor. The sugar content is low, and comes from fruit juice. I like to eat it for breakfast or a late afternoon snack with fresh fruit mixed in. Sometimes I’ll sprinkle in a little chia seed for added nutrition.

I highly recommend giving Amande a try. The website has a store finder, but if you’re in NYC it looks like many of the Whole Foods and Fairway stores carry it.
